EPA infographic titled 'Compost Your Food Scraps for a Healthier Planet' compares landfill and composting. Landfill section shows emissions, waste items, and a warning sign. Compost section highlights benefits: reduces emissions, builds flood resilience, sequesters carbon, enriches soil.

BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING

  • WHAT IS COMPOST?

Compost is created through a natural process where microorganisms, fungi, and bacteria break down organic materials in a controlled environment, turning them into a valuable resource for improving soil health.

  • WASTE COSTS AND DIRTY TRASH

Save Money on Trash Bags and Waste Disposal – By composting with us, you reduce the volume of your waste, cutting down on trash bag costs and even landfill fees!

Sealed buckets with your food waste = no smell and lighter bags of trash!

  • DIVERT WASTE FROM LANDFILLS

Our food waste takes up the MOST space in our landfills and directly produces methane gas.

Food waste diversion efforts are so important for reducing landfill waste and promoting more sustainable practices.

  • FOOD WASTE IN LANDFILLS = METHANE GAS

Join us to reduce the production of methane in our state!

Maine landfill stats

According to a study by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, approximately 361,000 tons of food loss and waste are generated annually in Maine. This includes contributions from households (36%), agriculture (25%), and commercial entities such as grocery stores and food manufacturers (37%). Notably, households are the largest single contributor, accounting for about 35% of the total food waste in the state. (Source: BioCycle)
